February is Black Heritage Month, this year’s theme is: “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build”.  

On January 18, 1958, Willie O’Ree stepped on the ice at the Montreal Forum to play his first game in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Boston Bruins — and made history. 

Hebecame the first Black player in the NHL. Known for his speed and checking abilities, his career was cut short by an injury. 

Today, Willie O’Ree is the director of the NHL’s diversity program. He travels across Canada and the United States promoting and teaching the game of hockey to children from all cultural backgrounds. 

In January 2008, fifty years after his NHL debut, Willie O’Ree’s home town of Fredericton, New Brunswick, named its new hockey arena Willie O’Ree Place, in honour of his achievements.

Knitting Club 

Anyone interested in learning how to knit OR improving their knitting is invited to Rm. 122 at lunch on Friday.  This first meeting is an expression of interest.  You will be filling out a form about what you'd like to learn and subsequent meetings will be planned accordingly.  If you're interested but can't make the meeting, please contact Ms. T. CENTENNIAL SCIENCE OLYMPICS 

Are you interested in the STEM subjects?  Do you like a good challenge? 

Centennial CVI's Science Olympics will take place on the afternoon of Friday, April 5, 2024. 

Events will include an engineering challenge, science trivia, a biology lab challenge, chemistry boggle, a math challenge, and a coding challenge.   

There will be a brief meeting at the beginning of lunch on Thursday, February 15th at lunch in Room 105 for all interested students.  Please see Ms. Burgess if you are interested but cannot attend. 

 

 

UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH BATTLE STEM (PREVIOUSLY THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH SCIENCE OLYMPICS)  

Mark your calendars!  The University of Guelph will be hosting its annual Battle STEM competition on Thursday, May 9th, 2024.  

This is a full day event. 

At Battle STEM, you will compete, in groups of four, against other teams from Southwestern Ontario for both prizes and bragging rights.  All students (both Juniors and Seniors) are eligible to participate in this event.  Events will cover a range of STEM subjects including – food science, anatomy, general biology, physics, chemistry, computer science, agricultural science, environmental science, and engineering.   

All students that are interested in participating in this event are invited to a brief meeting at the beginning of lunch in Room 105 on Friday, February 16th.  Please see Ms. Burgess for more information if you cannot attend this meeting. 

 

 

THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH'S BRAIN BEE 

It's back!  After a break of several years, the Brain Bee returns to the University of Guelph on Friday, March 1, 2024.   

If you are interested in the brain and its innerworkings, this may be the event for you.
